Cynicism: Is Conan O'Brien a Cynic?

Is Conan Cynic? What does Cynicism mean? If you've watched the Conan Last Show of Tonight Show, Conan said the following lines before he ended his show:

“All I ask of you is one thing: please don’t be cynical. I hate cynicism — it’s my least favorite quality and it doesn’t lead anywhere.”



So what does it mean to be cynical? Cynical means to be skeptic. Cynicism is an attitude of scornful or jaded negativity, especially a general distrust of the integrity or professed motives of others. To be a cynic means to throw a scornfully or jadedly negative comment or act.

Where does the word Cynicism originate? According to Wikipedia, the word Cynicism originated from the ancient Cynics of Greece. Cynics comprises of various philosophies of a group of ancient Greeks founded by Antisthenes in about the 4th century BC.

The Cynics are known to have rejected all conventions, whether of religion, manners, housing, dress, or decency, advocating the pursuit of virtue in a simple and unmaterialistic lifestyle. the negative aspects of Cynic philosophy led to a new and very different understanding of cynicism to mean an attitude of jaded negativity, and a general distrust of the integrity or professed motives of other people.
